Swimming Pool Installation - A Guide for Australian Homeowners

You’re here because you’re considering adding a swimming pool into your home.

Whether you just dreamt up the idea and want to see if it’s feasible, or you’re firmly committed to getting one and want to get the most from it; you’ve come to the right place.

As Port Macquarie’s trusted pool providers, we know a thing or two about swimming pool installation. From the different options to the pricing and everything in between, this is what Australian homeowners need to know before installing a pool in their yard.

In-Home Pool Benefits

You don’t need us to tell you how great swimming pools are, but in case you’re on the fence about getting one, here are some reasons to help sway you in the right direction:

Create memories

With a swimming pool in your yard, you’re just steps away from family-friendly fun and creating memories that last a lifetime. Play Marco Polo with your kids, bring your neighbours over for a grill out, or unwind with your spouse and a martini. Pools make this all possible.

Get exercise

Swimming pools are a great way to stay active and have fun. After all, a dip in the pool on a hot day sounds much more appealing than a long run, right?

Whether you’re after structured exercise in a lap pool or a standard pool for you and your family, both are much better than sitting on the couch.

Relax, unwind, and rejuvenate

There’s something about the presence of water that helps us feel at peace. If relaxation is your thing, you could consider a pool and spa combination or a model catered toward comfort, like the Serenity.

Add some style

There’s no better way to spice up your backyard than with a swimming pool installation. Impress your neighbours and give yourself something nice to look at out your window with a stylish pool like the Contemporary.

Increase your home value

Adding a swimming pool to your home is quite the upfront investment, but it can pay off. It will make your home more marketable, and can increase its value by as much as $100,000 to $200,000.

Enjoy convenience & privacy

While public pools can be fun, they’re hardly a place that many would consider relaxing. Plus, you’ve got to drive there, pay to get in, listen to screaming kids that aren’t your own, and even deal with unsanitary conditions sometimes.

If you like to swim and can afford the luxury of a private pool, the convenience & privacy factor is a big reason to consider the investment.

Swimming Pool Considerations

We’ve covered the benefits, but the reality is that owning a swimming pool isn’t always fun in the sun. Before installing a swimming pool into your home, here are some things to consider:

Upfront costs

Swimming pool installation costs start at about $30,000 and can run $80,000 or more depending on what you get.

Recurring costs

After you buy the pool, the bills don’t stop there. Plan on investing around $1,000 – $2,000 a year on chemicals, water, energy expenses, and pool equipment.

Maintenance & repairs

Maintaining a pool can be a decent amount of work. If you plan to do it yourself, you should plan on budgeting some time each week to keep it clean & in good operating condition. If you’re having a pool maintenance company handle it, you should budget an extra couple hundred dollars a month for their services.

A well-maintained pool system shouldn’t need much for repairs, but when they do arise they can cost thousands. So be sure to have an extra fund for any unexpected repairs or replacements that are needed.

Yard space

If you’ve got a large yard with plenty of free space and level ground, then no sweat. But if you’ve got a smaller yard, then you’ll want to consider a smaller pool like an above ground or plunge pool.

Climate

Another important consideration is the climate. Northern and coastal regions with year-round sun and warmth are better-suited for swimming pools. On the flip side, colder regions are less popular destinations for pools.

Pool Installation Cost

Like we mentioned, pool installations typically start at about $30,000 and can also cost upwards of $80,000, depending on a number of factors.

More specifically, the average cost of a swimming pool installation in Australia in 2024 is around $50,000. This number is based on the average prices from the hundreds of projects we’ve completed over the past several years, and our knowledge of standard industry rates in Australia. This price will get you a mid-range inground standard size pool. This price covers the labour, excavation, filtration, lighting, heating, and all other components for a complete swimming pool design.

As with anything, there’s great variability in pricing based on pool design, size, features, and services. Those on a budget can get an entry-level above ground pool and install it themselves for as little as $5,000, whereas a high-end luxury pool with expert installation and all the bells and whistles can cost well over $100,000.

Another pool cost consideration is the recurring monthly fees for electricity, water, maintenance, supplies, and equipment. On average, this costs about $150 total per month.

These prices can also vary depending on who you hire and what part of Australia you’re in. But on average, if you’re looking for a nice middle-range inground pool installed by professionals, you should budget about $50,000 upfront and $150 per month for expenses.

Swimming Pool Types
& Designs

The two most general classifications of swimming pools are above-ground pools and inground pools. Above-ground pools are typically circular or rectangular, and made out of steel, aluminium, or resin. They tend to be smaller and much more affordable.

Inground pools, on the other hand, offer a much wider variety of sizes, shapes, and styles. They’re typically constructed from either concrete, fibreglass, or vinyl. Some general classifications for inground pools include family pools, plunge pools, lap pools, and spas.

Family pools

Family pools are the general classification for your average backyard pool. They’re typically larger in size to accommodate family-friendly fun and activities.

Plunge pools

Plunge pools are inground pools that are a bit smaller in size. They emphasise sleek, stylish, and space-efficient designs.

Lap pools

Lap pools are narrower and longer, offering minimal designs focused on training and exercise.

Spa Pools

Spa pools emphasise relaxation and comfort. They offer things like hydrotherapy jets, special lighting, comfortable seating, and additional temperature controls to create relaxing, therapeutic experiences.

In addition to those general classifications, there’s a wide array of styles, designs, and sizes from different providers and brands.

At Arise Pools (that’s us), we offer the Port Macquarie region a large variety of leading designs to meet any requirement. To see some specific models and find inspiration on your perfect installation, check out our swimming pool designs.

Pool Installation Process

The swimming pool installation process is quite extensive, and requires a good amount of specialised equipment and expertise. It takes an average of 2-3 months to complete a project from start to finish.

The first step to building a swimming pool is site preparation. The contractors begin by mapping out the area, excavating, and laying the foundation.

Next, the pool is installed into the excavated area and the empty surrounding region backfilled for structural stability. After the area is backfilled, a structural bondbeam is poured around the perimeter to lock it securely into the ground. Once the pool itself is installed and fully secured, the filters and equipment are installed, and the pool is filled and treated.

Last, the contractors will give their proud new pool owners a walkthrough on the operation and maintenance of the system before cleaning up and leaving the jobsite. Should any issues arise, the good providers will be available to provide support if needed.

The Bottom Line

Swimming pools are the ultimate way to create fun experiences, unwind, and stay active from the comfort of your own home.

If you’re considering getting one, you should factor in your budget and intended uses. Those on a budget or with limited space can go with an above-ground pool. In-ground pools can be fibreglass, concrete, or vinyl; and come in many different styles, sizes, and designs.

The installation process requires a great deal of specialised equipment and expertise, so it’s important that you go with a reputable company you can trust.
